Change in winter landfill schedule for Selwyn

At the June 27 Selwyn Council meeting, Rick Dunford, Manager of Public Works presented Council with a report recommending an alternative option for extending the winter hours for the landfill site.
In October 2016, Public Works staff provided Council with a review of the landfill site operations and made numerous recommendations for change. At the October 14 Regular Meeting, Council passed a resolution to change winter hours of operation. At the same time, Council directed staff to consult with landfill site users and to assess the impact of the option to close Thursdays during the winter season.
Following discussions with business owners, contractors and residents over the 2016 winter season, staff brought forward a a new option, recommending that winter hours be extended from Thanksgiving weekend to Victoria Day weekend rather than closing on Thursdays. Currently winter hours are from November 1 to March 31. Essentially the winter schedule would be extended for an additional ten weeks.
Dunford noted in his report that “this will reduce operational expenses and result in the least amount of inconvenience to residents and businesses/contractors.”
Council supported the recommendation unanimously.
