Lakefield's Horse Medicine Collective raises funds and awareness

October 06, 2017

On a beautiful, brisk Saturday morning (September 30) FEEL Certified facilitator and equine specialist Jineen Des Vignes lead ten horses and their riders through the autumn leaves for a trail ride that took about two hours to complete.

The trail ride was the first of several events that took place at and around Kawartha Country Wines as part of a day-long fundraiser for Horse Medicine Collective.

Horse Medicine Collective is located in Lakefield and is a non-profit organization that offers equine therapy for individuals on the autism spectrum and with other neuropsychiatric conditions such as ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, bi-olar disorder and youth at risk.

Following the trail ride, participants were provided with a hot meal under the bright blue sky before moving inside for some wine tasting at the bar.

Tours of the wine cellar and cider tasting in the orchard preceded the 2017 Winolympic games on horseback.

In the afternoon, seven horses and riders competed in a number of different games including an equine version of musical chairs, but with large sticks. Horses had to find and be positioned over one of the decreasing sticks scattered throughout the grass.

Fundraising participants as well as winery patrons enjoyed feeding apples to Jineen’s two therapy horses; Miss Daisy and Sir Winston.

You can find Jineen at the Norwood Fair this weekend. However, you may also find her on Daisy or Winston throughout the Village as she takes her horses for a leisurely stroll when they’re not working with clients.
