ATV Club back at Douro-Dummer Council
March 10, 2017
BY TERRY MCQUITTY
Weity Hamersma president of the Peterborough County Trails ATV Club (formerly Havelock & District ATV Club) appeared before Douro-Dummer council on Tuesday evening with two proposals.
The first proposal was that ATVs be allowed on all secondary roads within the township. Hamersma pointed to other municipalities as such as Trent Hills as examples of success.
The second proposal was to set up routes that would allow ATV users to head north to Apsley and beyond. The routes in question would use township and county roads as well as trails through some private lands. Hamersma stated that they would not be able to meet with the county until some time in 2018 and there would have to be land use agreements with private land owners.
Hamersma also stated that the club planned to create trails six feet in width that would accommodate not only ATVs, but also hikers, skiers etc.
Councillor Ray Johnston asked how they planned to create these trails to which Hamersma replied the trails would be in the county forest and any going across private land would have to be negotiated with the owners.
The proposal asked for a one year trial bylaw which has been successful in other municipalities. Mayor Jones said they would not make a decision at the Tuesday meeting, but thought the one year trial on a smaller scale might work, and if successful they could expand in the future.
Johnston suggested that a public meeting be held to garner the input from ratepayers. Deputy Mayor Karl Moher moved that staff study the situation and report back to council.
