Literary awards for Lakefield boy
by Anita Locke
He might only be in Grade 3, but he has already amassed an impressive array of awards for his achievements at school.
Nick McCloskey attends St. Paul’s Separate School in Lakefield (“the best school ever!” he says) and recently won two prestigious awards from the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) for his submissions to the Young Authors program.
Nick’s teacher, Mrs. Millage, entered his stories in the Short Story and Non-Fiction categories.
His non-fiction story, written for Remembrance Day, was about his great grandfather who fought in the war and the equipment they used.
In the Short Story category, he wrote about his teddy bear (named “Blue”); the bear goes on a lot of adventures and Nick shares those adventures in his stories.
Nick loves to write; he says he ‘pictures’ things in his mind and then writes about them. His mom Trish, who is “super proud of him!” says Nick loves books, and loves to read; his favorite author is Robert Munsch.
Since he was very young, he’s always been good at math and reading, and has a real flair for creating intricate and detailed doodle drawings.
Nick hasn’t quite decided what he wants to be when he grows up, although at this stage he’s leaning towards becoming a waiter, a paleontologist, or an author.
In Grade 1 he presented a speech on Paleontology. That was also the year he received an Achievement Award for getting 10 A’s on his final report card.
Nick’s winning stories in the Young Author competition will now be submitted at the Provincial level.
