Dumas print helps support the BDTA

Sometimes things just work out.

The Buckhorn and District Tourist Association (BDTA) publishes an annual Tourist Guide which was developed to draw and keep visitors in the region.

The publication boasts complete information on accommodations, activities and events, detailed maps and beautiful cover artwork.

The cover of the 2008 brochure is a painting of a Blue Heron created by Michael Dumas.

The response to the cover has been absolutely overwhelming from both visitors and residents alike.

Janet Clarkson, Councillor at Large for the Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey and Economic Development Liaison to the BDTA parlayed the response to the brochure cover into a fundraising initiative.

Clarkson met with Dumas and inquired about the possibility of producing a limited edition print that could be sold with a portion of the proceeds going to the BDTA.

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the BDTA and the plan is to build a new tourist information booth to mark the occasion. The present booth is too small, not winterized and has no public washrooms.

The new tourist centre would be approximately 32’ by 32’ and would include a handicapped washroom, retail space and new landscaping with indigenous plant species making the building appropriate for the beautiful hamlet of Buckhorn. The plan is to make the centre viable for year round service.

Dumas agreed to donate his artwork to the organization. Dumas said “It’s a win-win situation, the BDTA can raise some money and the retailers selling the prints can realize a profit all the while promoting Buckhorn.”

The unframed print will sell for $100 and the framed print will sell for $200. The BDTA will receive 40 per cent of every sale while the retailer will receive 50 per cent and 10 per cent will go towards the cost of the project.

The print was presented to the public on Thursday evening at Bayside Boutique and Gallery in Buckhorn.

Approximately 60 people attended the gathering ranging from BDTA founding members to local politicians and a healthy representation from the general public.

Kawartha Country Wines offered locally produced wine to the attendees and a fine spread of food added to the joyous atmosphere.

The fundraiser is off to a great start as 23 prints were sold on the very first day.

Anyone interested in purchasing a print or would like to retail the artwork can phone Bayside Boutique and Gallery at 705-657-3315 or the Buckhorn and District Tourist Association at 705-657-3288.
