ATV group wants road access in GCH

by Simon Conolly

Galway-Cavendish and Harvey Township is moving towards formalizing an understanding that allows all-terrain vehicles to use township roads.

Steve Lane of the Kawartha ATV Association set things in motion at Tuesday’s council meeting. “We want a bylaw to allow controlled road use,” he told council.

Apparently, there is an informal arrangement in place at present under which the Ontario Provincial Police do not charge ATV riders for driving on township roads, as long as all regulations are being complied with.

But for purposes of marketing the area, enabling legislation must be passed, he said.

Also in attendance was Steve Repath, Chair of the Police Services Board.

He said the association would like access to all township roads in Galway and Cavendish wards, and some roads in Harvey.

The association will also approach Peterborough County regarding use of county roads in the township.

Councillors were generally in favour of the idea, citing a boost for the tourist industry with more ATV riders visiting the township.

On a motion by Councillor Peter Franzen, the association will work with township staff to draw up a proposal specifying exactly which roads would be affected.

Mr. Franzen called for a recorded vote on his motion, and it was supported by all council members.
