Official launch for Clear/Stoney/White Lake Plan
by Simon Conolly
Provincial Minister of Natural Resources Donna Cansfield was on hand Monday for the official launch of the Clear/Stoney/White Lake Plan.
About 100 people gathered at the Upper Stoney Lake Association Pavillion at Crowe’s Landing to get a first look at the document, which is the result of three years work by a dedicated volunteer committee, assisted by French Planning Services Inc.
Co-chair of the Steering Committee, Rob Little, said that while the plan is now complete, the work is just beginning.
The next stage of the effort involves working with Peterborough County and four municipalities which border the lakes to have the plan’s provisions incorporated into Zoning Bylaws and Official Plans.
A $15,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant provided about 30 per cent of the funding for the plan, with 45 per cent coming from the five cottager’s associations in the area.
The final 25 per cent came from the Stoney Lake Heritage Foundation, the Stoney Lake Environmental Council, and private donations.
The plan includes 42 recommendations designed to preserve the water quality in the lakes.
The Action Plan includes:
• Engage the community by developing a network of volunteers to implement the recommendatioins and maintain consensus on the lakes;
• Create a Lake Plan Task Force to proactively support the Provincial, County and Township Official Plan and Zoning Bylaw amendment process;
• Provide information to property owners and other lake users;
• Continue to partner with agencies and groups;
• Continue to work with the County and four Townships; and
• Continue to promote communication and social interaction among stakeholders.
The complete plan is available at www.stonylake.on.ca and will be posted soon to The Herald’s website.
